A healthy battery that is left alone from November to April will usually not start the vehicle in spring, and it may never fully recover. This guide explains why, how a maintainer differs from a charger, and how to set up a stored car, motorcycle, snowmobile or RV so the battery comes out of winter as good as it went in.
Why a stored battery dies
Every vehicle draws a small current when it is off: the clock, the alarm, the radio memory. Add the battery's own self-discharge, which speeds up as it gets cold and then slows, and a typical lead-acid battery loses enough charge in six to eight weeks to start sulphating. Below −20 °C a discharged battery can also freeze and crack its case. A fully charged battery freezes at around −60 °C; a flat one at −7 °C. Keeping it topped up is what protects it.
Maintainer, trickle charger or smart charger?

For a vehicle you will not touch for months, a 1–1.5 A maintainer from NOCO, Schumacher or Battery Tender is the right tool. A larger smart charger from the battery chargers collection makes sense if you also need to revive batteries or you keep several vehicles.
Match the chemistry
Flooded lead-acid, AGM and lithium (LiFePO4) batteries want different voltages. Most modern maintainers have a selector; set it to AGM for the sealed batteries in most newer cars and bikes, and use a lithium-specific mode or charger for lithium powersports batteries, which can be damaged by a lead-acid desulphation cycle. If your machine has a 6 V battery (some classic cars and small equipment), buy a charger that lists 6 V explicitly.
Install the quick-connect harness
Most maintainers ship with a ring-terminal harness that bolts to the battery posts and ends in a weatherproof SAE plug. Fit it once and the winter routine becomes plugging in one connector. Route it away from the exhaust and pinch points, and cap the plug in summer. Extension leads and spare harnesses are in battery accessories.
Heated garage, cold garage or outside?
In a heated garage a maintainer is all you need. In an unheated garage or under a cover outside, keep the maintainer on and, if the vehicle will sit below −20 °C for weeks, consider pulling the battery indoors to a shelf in the basement and maintaining it there. Never charge a frozen battery; let it warm up first.
Storage checklist
- Fill the fuel tank and add stabiliser; run the engine long enough to move treated fuel through the system.
- Change the oil before storage, not after, so acidic used oil does not sit in the engine.
- Inflate tires 5–10 psi above normal or use stands to prevent flat spots.
- Connect the maintainer and confirm the indicator shows charging, then float.
- Fit a breathable cover; a plastic tarp traps moisture.
- Block the exhaust and intake against rodents, and note it on a tag on the steering wheel so you remember in spring.
