Cabin filters are the single most commonly deferred piece of maintenance on any car, and on a Tesla they are one of the very few consumables the owner ever touches. They are also the item where the model-year refreshes cause the most ordering confusion, because the Highland and Juniper updates changed the filter housing.

Get the generation right first

  • Model 3, 2017–2023. The original housing. Two filters, accessed from the passenger footwell.
  • Model 3 Highland, 2024 onward. Revised front end and revised filter assembly. Filters listed for the earlier car do not reliably fit.
  • Model Y, 2020–2024. Similar arrangement to the earlier Model 3, and many filters are listed for both.
  • Model Y Juniper, 2025 onward. Again a revised assembly, and again listed separately.

When a listing says "2020–2026 including Juniper" it has been validated across the refresh. When it stops at 2024, take that at face value.

How often, in Canadian conditions

The general guidance for these cars is every two years. Canadian driving conditions argue for more often in two specific cases. If you commute on a gravel road, or if you drive through a lot of construction, dust loads the filter far faster than the interval assumes. And in spring, high pollen loads plus a filter that has been sitting damp through a freeze-thaw winter is the usual cause of a musty smell from the vents.

The practical test: if airflow at maximum fan is noticeably weaker than it was, or if there is any smell when the climate system starts, the filter is due regardless of the calendar.

Standard, carbon or HEPA

A standard particulate filter captures dust, pollen and road grit. It is what the car came with and it is sufficient for most owners.

An activated carbon filter adds an odour-absorbing layer. If you sit in traffic behind diesel vehicles or drive through agricultural areas, this is the upgrade worth paying for.

HEPA is a specific efficiency standard. Genuine HEPA media is thicker and restricts airflow more, so it needs a housing designed for it. Aftermarket filters described as "HEPA-grade" for a standard housing are generally high-efficiency particulate filters rather than certified HEPA. That is not dishonest and they do filter better than standard media, but do not expect the sealed-cabin performance of the factory HEPA package on cars that have it.

Doing the change

It is a hand-tool job that takes twenty minutes the first time and ten thereafter. The filters sit in the passenger footwell behind a trim panel; on most of these cars you remove a kick panel, then a plastic cover, and the two filters slide out vertically — usually the upper one first. Note the airflow arrow on the old filter and match it. Both filters go in as a pair; replacing one and leaving the other defeats the point.

Multi-pack listings exist because owners tend to do this on a schedule. If you are buying anyway, a two or three-pack is usually the better value per filter and they store flat.

One Canadian-specific note

Cabin filters get damp in winter because warm humid cabin air meets a cold housing. A damp filter that then sits for weeks is where the smell comes from. Running the climate system on fresh air rather than recirculation for the last few minutes of a drive dries the housing, and it is free.

Does a Juniper Model Y take the same filter as a 2023 Model Y?

Not reliably. The Juniper refresh changed the assembly. Buy a filter whose listing explicitly covers your model year, and treat 2025 onward as a separate part.

How do I know the filter needs changing?

Weak airflow at maximum fan and any musty smell at start-up are the two practical signs. The default interval is around two years, sooner on gravel roads or with heavy construction dust.

Is a carbon filter worth the extra cost?

If you spend time in traffic or near agriculture, yes — it is the only one of the three types that addresses odour. For open-road driving the standard particulate filter is adequate.

Do I have to replace both filters together?

Yes. Air passes through both, so a new filter behind a loaded one gives you the airflow restriction of the old one and little of the benefit.
