The connector on the back of your vehicle decides what the trailer can do. A 4-pin flat carries lights only. A 7-way round adds brakes, reverse and power. Choosing between them is really a question about the trailer you intend to pull, not about the vehicle.

What each connector carries

4-pin flat has one ground and three functions: tail/running lights, left turn/brake, right turn/brake. That is the whole list. It is enough for a utility trailer, a small boat trailer or a bike rack with lights.

7-way round keeps those four and adds three: electric trailer brakes, reverse lights, and a switched or constant 12V feed. The 12V line is what charges a camper battery while you drive and runs the breakaway switch battery.

There is also a 5-pin flat, which is a 4-pin plus one circuit — usually reverse, used to disable surge brakes when backing up on boat trailers.

How to decide in one question

Does the trailer have electric brakes? If yes, you need a 7-way and a brake controller in the cab. Nothing else will do the job — the brake circuit needs a variable signal that a 4-pin has nowhere to carry. If the trailer has no brakes and you never plan to tow one that does, a 4-pin is not a compromise, it is simply the right connector.

The second question is whether anything on the trailer needs power while you drive: a camper fridge, a battery, an interior light circuit. That also puts you on a 7-way.

Use a vehicle-specific harness, not a splice

Most vehicles sold in the last fifteen years have a factory connector behind the rear bumper trim, and a plug-and-play T-connector harness plugs into it without cutting a single wire. This matters more than it used to: modern tail light circuits are monitored, and splicing into them can throw a bulb-out fault or confuse the trailer detection logic.

If you do have to splice on an older vehicle, solder and heat-shrink the joints. Twist connectors and blue crimp taps fail within a season or two on a salted vehicle, and they fail intermittently, which is far harder to diagnose than a clean break.

Grounding is where most trailer light problems live

If your trailer lights are dim, if the turn signal makes the running lights flash, or if brake lights come on when you signal, look at the ground before you look at anything else. Trailer grounds are supposed to run on the white wire back to the connector, but many trailers rely on the coupler and ball for ground, which works right up until the ball gets greasy or the receiver rusts. Run a dedicated ground wire from the trailer frame to the connector and most odd lighting behaviour disappears.

Winter care

Both connector types corrode. Dielectric grease in the socket and a cover over it when not in use will add years. If a circuit works intermittently in the cold, pull the plug and look for green on the pins — that is corrosion raising resistance, and cleaning it usually restores the circuit without any parts at all.

Can I use an adapter to run a 7-way trailer from a 4-pin vehicle?

You can adapt the lighting functions, but an adapter cannot create circuits the vehicle does not have. Brakes, reverse and 12V charging will not work without the underlying wiring and, for brakes, a controller.

Do I need a brake controller if my trailer has surge brakes?

No. Surge brakes are hydraulic and actuate mechanically from the coupler. A controller is only for electric trailer brakes.

Why do my trailer lights work but the brake lights do not?

Most often a bad ground or a corroded pin on the brake circuit. Test at the connector with a circuit tester before pulling the trailer apart — the fault is on the vehicle side about half the time.

Is a plug-and-play harness better than splicing?

On any modern vehicle, yes. It preserves the factory circuit monitoring, it is reversible, and it avoids the intermittent faults that splices develop once salt gets into them.
