The Silverado and Sierra share almost everything under the skin, brakes included, and they get through pads faster than most half-tons because of how they are used: loaded beds, trailers, and stop-start winter driving on salted roads. The compound you choose changes the noise, the dust and, more importantly, how the brakes behave when they are hot.
The two compounds, honestly compared
Semi-metallic pads use steel or copper fibres bonded into the friction material. They bite harder when hot, shed heat into the rotor well, and cost less. They are also noisier, they produce dark dust that sticks to wheels, and they wear rotors faster.
Ceramic pads use ceramic fibres with a small amount of metal. They run quieter, produce a much lighter dust that does not bond to the wheel finish, and are gentler on rotors. Their weakness is cold bite: on a genuinely cold morning a ceramic pad needs a stop or two before it feels normal, and under sustained heavy load they fade sooner than a good semi-metallic.
Which one for how you actually use the truck
- Mostly commuting, empty bed. Ceramic. The quieter operation and clean wheels are worth more to you than the last ten percent of hot bite you will never use.
- Regular towing, or a loaded bed most days. Semi-metallic, or a performance carbon-ceramic pad specifically rated for towing. Heat is your enemy and semi-metallic manages it better.
- Rural Canadian driving with long downhill grades. Semi-metallic. Fade resistance matters more than dust.
- Mixed use with a trailer a few times a year. A carbon-fibre ceramic pad marketed for truck and tow duty splits the difference well and is what most owners end up on.
Why winter changes the answer
Two things happen to truck brakes in a Canadian winter. First, road salt and brine attack the rotor face and the caliper slide pins. A rotor that sits unused overnight in salt spray will surface-rust by morning; that layer scrubs off in the first few stops, which is normal, but it does accelerate pad wear over a season. Second, caliper slide pins seize. A seized pin means one pad does all the work, which you notice as uneven wear and a pull under braking long before you notice a noise.
Whatever compound you choose, clean and re-grease the slide pins with high-temperature silicone caliper grease when the pads go in. It is a five-minute job that prevents the single most common winter brake failure on these trucks.
Do the rotors have to be replaced too?
Not automatically. Measure the thickness against the minimum stamped on the rotor hat. If there is material left and the surface is smooth, new pads will bed onto it fine. Replace rotors when they are below minimum, when you can feel a pulse through the pedal that a re-torque does not fix, or when you are switching from semi-metallic to ceramic — the old compound leaves a transfer layer that the new pad will fight for a while.
Bedding them in properly
New pads need a transfer layer laid down evenly. From about 60 km/h, brake firmly to about 15 km/h without stopping, then accelerate again — repeat six to eight times, then drive for ten minutes without heavy braking to let everything cool. Do not sit with your foot on the pedal at a red light while the brakes are hot: that prints the pad shape onto the rotor and produces exactly the pulse you were trying to avoid.

Why do my new ceramic pads squeal in the cold?
Ceramic compounds need a little heat to reach their working range. A squeal on the first stops of a cold morning that disappears once the brakes warm is normal. A squeal that persists when warm points to missing shims or dry slide pins.
Do I need to replace front and rear pads at the same time?
No. Fronts do roughly seventy percent of the work on these trucks and typically wear out twice as fast. Replace them as axle pairs — both sides of the same axle together — but the front and rear axles do not have to match in age.
Are drilled and slotted rotors worth it on a half-ton?
For towing and sustained downhill braking, slotted rotors help by giving gas and debris somewhere to go. Drilled rotors are mostly cosmetic on a truck and can crack around the holes under heavy heat cycling.
How often should the slide pins be serviced?
Every pad change at minimum, and annually if the truck lives on salted roads. Seized pins are the most common cause of premature and uneven pad wear in Canadian winters.
