The Wrangler is the most modified vehicle most parts catalogues carry, and it is also the one where the wrong-generation order happens most often. The reason is simple: Jeep sold the JK and the JL alongside each other through the 2018 model year, so "2018 Wrangler" tells a parts catalogue almost nothing.
Telling them apart in five seconds
- Grille slots. The JL's outer two slots curve into the headlight surround. The JK's seven slots are all straight.
- Windshield. The JL's is more raked and its wipers park differently; the JK's stands noticeably more upright.
- Tail lights. JK tail lights are a flat rectangle. JL tail lights have a distinct squared-off outline with the reverse lamp separated.
- Door hinges and mirror mounts. The JL moved the mirrors onto the windshield frame area rather than the door on some configurations, which is why door-off mirror kits are generation-specific.
If you are still unsure, the eighth character of the VIN differs by engine and the overall VIN pattern differs between the platforms — but on a 2018 vehicle, the grille is faster and reliable.
What genuinely crosses over
Fewer things than people assume, and almost none of the body-mounted parts:
- Interior organisation and storage — many console trays, seat-back organisers and MOLLE panels are sold for both because they mount to shared hardware.
- Some lighting — universal light bars and their generic brackets carry over. Anything that mounts to the A-pillar, cowl or bumper does not.
- Hardtop removal aids and top storage bags — often listed for both, and frequently for the Gladiator as well, because the panel dimensions are close.
- Consumables — filters, fluids and brake components follow the engine and axle rather than the body, so they are listed by drivetrain instead.
What does not cross over
Hitches, bumpers, fender flares, sun shade tops, door sill protection, tail light housings, tonneau-style trunk covers and almost all interior trim. The frame rail mounting points moved between JK and JL, which is why a JK hitch will not bolt to a JL even though both are 2-inch Class III receivers.
Where the Gladiator fits
The JT Gladiator shares its front end and much of its interior with the JL, so a surprising number of JL parts are listed for it — filters, front lighting, hardtop accessories, interior storage. Everything from the B-pillar back is unique because of the bed. When a listing names "Wrangler JL / Gladiator" together, it is usually a front-half or interior part, and that is a good sanity check.
The hardtop, and why it drives so many purchases
Both generations use a three-piece hardtop with removable front panels, and both generations create the same two problems the moment you take it apart. The panels have to live somewhere — bare in a garage they get scratched, and in a truck bed they slide — which is why padded panel storage bags are one of the most-bought Wrangler accessories. And the full hardtop is awkward and heavy enough that lifting it off alone is how most people damage either the top or themselves. Hoists and one-person removal aids exist for exactly this, and many are listed for JK, JL and Gladiator together because the lifting points are similar even where the panels are not.

Buying advice
Filter by generation first, then by door count. Two-door and four-door take different tops, different sunshade panels, different cargo covers and different soft top storage. The listing will say "JLU" or "4-door" when it matters — and on this vehicle, it matters more often than not.
One more habit worth building: when a listing names a year range that straddles 2018, read it twice. "2007–2018" means JK. "2018–2026" means JL. A listing that simply says "2018" without a generation is the one to ask about before ordering.

Is my 2018 Wrangler a JK or a JL?
Check the grille: if the outer two slots bend into the headlight surround, it is a JL. Straight slots across all seven mean JK. Jeep sold both as 2018 models, so the year alone will not tell you.
Will JK fender flares fit a JL?
No. The fender openings and mounting points changed. Flares, bumpers and anything else that bolts to the body or frame are generation-specific.
Do JL parts fit the Gladiator?
Front-half and interior parts often do — the two share a great deal forward of the B-pillar. Anything involving the rear body or the bed does not.
Are 2-door and 4-door parts interchangeable?
